Power Untamed
A Spear and Greatsword Untamed on Berserker's and Marauder — the Ranger that corrupts boons, with the strip riding on the pet.
Corrupting Vines turns the pet's
Rending Vines into boon corruption and puts a strip on your Unleashed Ambush skills as well. That means half the build's job lives on an animal that has to stay alive and stay unleashed.
Why these traits
The Untamed majors are split between your bar and the pet's.
Corrupting Vines converts boons into conditions instead of removing them and lets your Unleashed Ambush skills strip on top;
Blinding Outburst makes the pet's
Venomous Outburst hit 25% harder and blind, and raises ambush damage;
Let Loose turns those same ambushes into might and quickness for nearby allies and refreshes
Unleashed Power when you swap weapons. The
Natural Fortitude minor adds vitality and makes those ambushes siphon health.
Predator's Onslaught is the multiplier the rest of the build feeds: greatsword's
Hilt Bash, the knockdown on
Exploding Spores, the cripple from the
Alpha Focus minor and the chill from
Hydromancy all leave a target it pays out on.
Farsighted raises weapon strike damage flatly and more so past 600 range, and
Stoneform means your elite fires a lesser
Signet of Stone for free while pressing the signet itself hands you might and fury. Skirmishing rounds it out:
Vicious Quarry for fury-into-crit,
Primal Reflexes for vigor on evade,
Strider's Strength for the power it gives you and the pet with no weapon condition attached.
Gear reasoning
Berserker's and Marauder under
Scholar — flat power and ferocity. Four of the five skills on the bar are cantrips —
Perilous Gift,
Mutate Conditions,
Exploding Spores and
Forest's Fortification — which is exactly what
Deadeye pays for: increased strike damage after each one.
Hydromancy chills on weapon swap and hands
Predator's Onslaught a target;
Fire blasts on a critical hit and
Rage turns one into three seconds of quickness;
Bloodlust stacks power off kills.
The defensive kit is deeper than the stat line suggests.
Signet of Stone keeps passive toughness on you and the pet, and its active takes you and the pet out of incoming attack damage entirely — conditions and control still land.
Forest's Fortification is the real save: ten stacks of
Stability, resistance, resolution, superspeed and 50% less incoming damage, and hitting things while it is up brings it back sooner.
Perilous Gift makes you immune to damage and conditions while it runs, carries
Stability of its own, and heals you off your missing health when it ends.
Mutate Conditions breaks stun and dumps everything on you into vulnerability.
Mists-Infused Spherified Peppercorn-Spiced Oyster Soup is another -10% incoming damage and +45 to all attributes in WvW;
Writ of Masterful Strength adds 200 power while you are above 90% health.
When not to run it
The pet is a body in the AoE. When it dies, the corruption dies with it, and you are left as a plain melee damage dealer with a strip on
Exploding Spores.
Vow of the Untamed pulls the same way: your damage bonus wants you unleashed, the damage reduction wants the pet unleashed, and you only get one at a time.
All of the defence here points inward.
Forest's Fortification is ten stacks of
Stability, resistance, resolution and half your incoming damage — for you.
Perilous Gift and
Signet of Stone are the same story. This build has plenty of
Stability; it has none to give anyone.
If the fight is a pile where nothing squishy survives on the ground, Soulbeast merges the pet away and never has this problem — it just gives up the corruption to do it.
